MULE
DEER BOWHUNTS IN ALBERTA
CANADA
Our Mule Deer archery
hunts are a bow hunters dream. In our hunting zone, Peace River
region of Alberta, Canada, mule deer have been on a limited
draw since 1997 which has increased deer numbers and added age
to the bucks.
Mule deer in our bowhunting zone always had excellent genetics.
Five out of the top ten mule deer ever taken in Alberta are
from our area. This includes the number 1 typical taken 1 1/2
miles from my house by a local neighbor boy; it scored 206 Boone
and Crockett. Now the situation is even better. The excellent
genetics are still there with very light hunting pressure.
During Bow hunting season in late August, our biggest mule deer
that we have taken scored 215 net p&y. In 2008 we took the
largest, non resident typical mule deer for the year at 179
7/8 net. Every year we get shots or at least stalks on a buck
or bucks over 200 p&y. For me this is the most exciting
hunt we do, it is always great to see bucks over 170 and put
a stalk on them. The stalking is easier than most hunters realize
due to the habits of mule deer being a lot different then whitetails.
We have no success stalking big whitetails bucks. At this time
we have had our easiest winter in 10 years the buck numbers
are increasing again. |
