2002 Hunting Summary
Smoky River Outfitting - Alberta Canada Big Game Hunting Outfitters &Guides

We are happy to say we had another successful year in 2002.

Wolf Hunt
We started with a couple winter Wolf hunters they had pretty good luck and took a nice blue Wolf out of a pack of ten and almost got another. At one of the other baits Wolves could be herd howling at the bait but would leave before legal shooting light. We saw lots of Coyotes and did a little trapping and
ski-dooing.
Spring Bear Hunt
This spring was very late coming so I was a little worried as I had no baits hit out of 30 for the first week but five days before the guys got here things picked up fast. Our first group was from Spain so we had many laughs trying to communicate but in the end got seven bears for the four guys. The following week we had six guys take eight bears so all in all things went good we also took our highest percentage of color phase bears from Chocolate to White was 80%.
Whitetail & Mule Deer Hunt
Last week of August was the start of Archery Mule Deer and Whitetail season. Butch was our first hunter he started off a little rough, hitting a Buck in the front shoulder that was 30 inches wide but we kept at it all week stalking about 3 Bucks a day and ended up with a 160 on the last day. The next week was a lot of fun again we stalked about three Bucks a day. Ryan shot a 160 on day three and Rick grazed a 160 low. The last day we seen a group of six bucks the biggest was 190 but our push never panned out. Total this season I seen five bucks with drop tines and three clean 190 typicals. I was able to harvest a good buck for myself that scored 217 non-typical. Very fun season. Can't even imagine the bucks next year. The draw sure is working.
Rut Elk Hunt
Elk was very tough this year for my two Archery hunters. I called in a nice 6x6 to 30 yards both guys drew on him but he wouldn't give them good angle so he was very lucky to have ethical hunters that let him grow another year. We had a bear rip up camp and Wolves 100 yards away the guys hunted hard all week we chased a few but no Elk steak for us just an adventure.

Rifle Elk hunts were very tough we had four days of rain and wind, terrible conditions for calling but the guys toughed it out and ended up taking four bulls for six guys. First season with bad weather, hope for better next year, still have excellent Elk population.

Rut Moose Hunt
Rut Moose hunts were incredible Bull Moose everywhere and good hunting weather. Six for six the first week, and four for four for the second week. Ten Bulls taken total with the biggest one 55 inches wide. Lot of fun, good hunters and learned something new while taking pictures of big moose have bullet in gun or wear running shoes.
