2000 Hunting Summary

Smoky River Outfitting - Alberta Canada Big Game Hunting Outfitters & Guides

Year 2000 brought us a lot of familiar faces, and some new ones as well.
Over all a very productive year. The animals appeared to be in good health and abundance.

Spring Bear Hunt
Black Bear HuntThis past spring netted us 2 B&C bears scoring 21-1/2 & 21-1/4 both measuring over 8' in length. We had good success using the river as our primary operation area. Our success was over 150% again and over half were colored bears. We are moving forward every year in success, size and knowledge of the area and bears in general. If history dictates properly 2001 will be even better. We will ensure this by continuing to learn and refine our hunting and baiting methods. We had a number of close encounters with the bears including the blonde charger, but that's another story for Corey to tell next year. We had a good mix of bow, rifle & primitive weapons to test our setups. The fishing and relaxing was an added bonus to the spring hunt, and we will continue this next year.
Rut Elk Hunt
Elk HuntFall started with the rut elk hunt, our best elk hunt to date. We were 6 for 6 and recorded the highest scoring elk taken by an outfitter in the province, taken by Pat Beland. We averaged heavy 5x5 elk. Elk numbers in the zone are steadily increasing due to migration to further north food sources. We also believe over population and increased traffic in the national parks nearby are pushing elk and moose our way. This week Rod also took a moose with his bow. After the hunt we even had time for a "nite on the town social" that was a big hit (according to Glen Brown!) we all had a good time and even learned some new tricks.
Rut Moose Hunt

Moose HuntMoose hunting was good again, the tick problem is behind us now and a lot of cows had 2 calves in tow. We had over 85% despite the fact that the bulls were not calling as much due to the warm weather. We found some exiting new areas that have been untouched and harvest potential will be good for years to come. We also know that Al can still pull one out of the hat when need be.

Future Outlook
Next year we plan to be more aggressive in the baiting, scouting of new areas, attracting bow hunters to take advantage of the early season (see www.albertabowhunting.com ). Wolf hunts in winter have been good and feel it is a good opportunity for a vacation hunt in the slow season. We are also looking at wood buffalo hunts in the winter months. We are improving our remote accommodations. Good luck to all in 2001 and beyond
